Martin Smith was taught to play
by his father and they both played in the local Salvation Army Band. At the age of
eighteen Martin gave up playing to pursue sporting interests, his career and later
on, his family. After a thirty-five year absence from playing, he returned to playing
and is currently Principal Euphonium with one of the leading bands in the South
East. As part of his comeback he passed his ATCL and LTCL, both with distinction
in one year and recently passed his Fellowship at Trinity College London (FTCL).
He is now studying for a Masters Degree in Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with one of the leading education specialists of the euphonium, Dr Robert Childs.
Having given up playing for so long he is keen to see how far he can take his
musical career and he is very encouraged by the new music written for the solo
euphonium for recitals and concertos with orchestras. He has an ever-growing
number of public recitals and solo appearances in the UK and abroad (see his website
www.martinsmitheuphonium.com) and recently gave a very successful recital to
over 350 people at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. His love for the euphonium
is very apparent and he takes great encouragement from people telling him that he
has inspired them to return to playing a musical instrument!
Angela Zanders was born in London and started piano lessons with her father. She
went on to study at The Purcell School, Trinity College of Music and Goldsmiths'
College in London and at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna. At Trinity College, where she studied with Joseph Weingarten, Angela won several competitions and awards. She later studied chamber music with Murray Perahia, William Pleeth and Raphael Wallfisch.
Angela has performed all over the UK, including venues such as London's Wigmore Hall, South Bank and St. Martin's-in-the-Fields and St. David's Hall in Cardiff, and in Germany, Spain, the Canary Islands, Austria, Australia and New Zealand, both as soloist and accompanist and as pianist in the Solarek Piano Trio, which she formed in 1992. She does a great deal of freelance accompanying and coaches instrumentalists and singers for concerts and examinations. For ten years Angela was accompanist at the Centre for Young Musicians in London.
Angela has a passionate commitment to promoting the accessibility of classical music through talks and lecture recitals. She has many years' experience of lecturing in Music Appreciation, both for Birkbeck College, University of London and for the WEA and U3A in Hampshire.
Angela has been a lecturer at the University of Chichester since 2010 and adjudicates for The British
and International Federation of Festivals.
